How the coding week changed my perspective on IT

Most young people hearing about coding for the first time think one of two things: either it is incredibly complex, or it is useful but boring. EU Code Week Latvia exists specifically to prove both of these assumptions wrong. This is a look back at what this week actually offers someone entering with zero experience.

What do you do during code week?

EU Code Week Latvia takes place every year in October, involving schools, youth centers, and organizations across the country. The first day usually begins with visual programming—where you drag and drop blocks—or with algorithmic thinking, which doesn’t require writing any code at all. No one is thrown into the deep end..

Why “I don’t understand math” is not an argument

Coding and mathematics overlap, but they are not the same thing. Most daily programming work involves creating logical sequences: if A happens, then do B. People who were convinced that coding “wasn’t their thing” find themselves working on a specific task and seeing results on the screen after just a couple of hours.

What are the long-term benefits?

In the Latvian IT market, the shortage of specialists is real, and entry-level positions are often available even without a higher education degree, provided there is practical experience. However, Code Week does not give you a job. It gives you something else: an understanding of whether this field interests you at all. The week is short enough to try it out without commitment, yet structured enough to see whether it captivates you or not.

What happens to those who continue?

After Code Week Latvia, some participants find online courses or start CS50 and similar free programs on their own. Others conclude that coding isn’t for them, yet the digital tools they use every day no longer seem like such a “black box.” In both cases, you leave with a clearer perspective than when you entered. Inspiria participates in EU Code Week Latvia as one of the organizers. Current information about the next event can be found in the “Projects” section.
